Journalist and human rights activist Rafael Marques de Morais was released today after several hours under police custody in Luanda. Free lance journalist Alexandre Solombe and Voice of America correspondent Coke Mukuta were also released. The group of several youth who had been arrested during the same police operation remained in detention at the time of publication of this article.
The three journalists and several youth were forced to lie face down in the police van in which they were transported and trampled by agents of the Rapid Intervention Police (PIR). The journalists’ equipment, including cameras and mobile phones, were seized and damaged by PIR officers.
The group of detainees was initially taken to the PIR unit and then transferred to the command of the Provincial Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DPIC).
The arrest occurred today at about 4 P.M., near Largo Serpa Pinto near the Police Court, in Luanda, when the three journalists interviewed the youth protesters who had just been released, following their arrested on Thursday, September 19, during an attempted anti-government demonstration.
